Area of Science:

  • Optoelectronics
  • Nanofabrication
  • Fiber Optics

Background:

  • Grating couplers are essential for fiber-to-chip optical interconnects.
  • Precise alignment is critical for minimizing coupling loss in optical systems.
  • Standard grating couplers often require stringent alignment tolerances.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To fabricate and characterize a wider grating coupler for enhanced alignment tolerance.
  • To improve the performance of single-mode fiber to grating coupler interfaces.
  • To investigate the impact of grating coupler width on positional accuracy.

Main Methods:

  • Fabrication of a 20 um wide grating coupler.
  • Coupling experiments with a single-mode thermally-expanded-core (TEC) fiber.

  • Measurement of coupling loss, optical bandwidth, and alignment tolerances.
  • Comparison with a standard 10 um wide grating coupler.
  • Main Results:

    • Minimal coupling loss of 5 dB per facet achieved.
    • Optical 3 dB bandwidth measured at 40 nm.
    • Enhanced alignment tolerances: ±7.5 µm (horizontal) and +290 µm (vertical) at 3 dB.
    • Alignment tolerances improved 2x (horizontal) and 4x (vertical) compared to standard couplers.

    Conclusions:

    • The 20 um wide grating coupler significantly enhances alignment tolerance for TEC fibers.
    • Wider grating couplers offer a practical solution for relaxed alignment in optical systems.
    • This advancement facilitates easier and more robust fiber optic connections.
