Summary

Shoulder arthrodesis using a reconstruction plate is effective for glenohumeral salvage. This method is useful in cases without severe bone deficit, but requires further consideration for preventing fractures in cases with significant bone loss.

Background:

Shoulder arthrodesis aims to achieve bony union and pain relief.
Reconstruction plates offer a method for shoulder joint fusion.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the efficacy and complications of shoulder arthrodesis with a reconstruction plate.
To assess outcomes in patients with various indications for shoulder fusion.

Main Methods:

Retrospective review of eight patients undergoing shoulder arthrodesis with a reconstruction plate between 1995 and 2005.
Indications included tuberculous arthritis, malignant bone tumors, pyogenic arthritis, failed arthrodesis, and brachial plexus paralysis.
Outcomes were evaluated based on bony union and pain levels.

Arthroscopic Management of Massive Irreparable Rotator Cuff Tears: Whole Rotator Cable Reconstruction Using Proximal Biceps Tendon Autograft

Average follow-up was 44 months.
Two cases of malignant tumor required homologous bone grafting due to severe bone deficit, experiencing post-plate removal fractures.
No severe pain or other complications occurred in the remaining six cases.

Conclusions:

Shoulder arthrodesis with a reconstruction plate is a valuable technique for glenohumeral salvage when severe bone deficit is absent.
Additional strategies are needed to mitigate fracture risk in cases with substantial bone loss.
