Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is a type of cancer that occurs when there is an abnormal growth of skin cells, usually triggered by damage to the DNA within the skin cells. Summary

This case report details an extremely rare instance of extensive conjunctival-corneal squamous cell carcinoma. Surgical excision combined with cryotherapy effectively treated the ocular tumor, preventing recurrence.

Background:

  • Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the conjunctiva is a relatively uncommon malignancy.
  • Extensive ocular surface SCC can present significant challenges in management and treatment.

Observation:

  • A case of a 68-year-old male with a nodular mass completely covering the cornea and involving the limbus and conjunctiva is presented.
  • The lesion was identified as a moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma upon histopathologic examination.

Findings:

  • Complete surgical excision with 2-mm tumor-free margins was achieved.
  • Adjuvant double-freeze cryotherapy was applied circumferentially to the ocular surface.
  • No evidence of tumor recurrence was observed during a 12-month follow-up period.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the potential for squamous cell carcinoma to extensively involve the entire cornea.
  • Aggressive surgical management coupled with cryotherapy may be an effective strategy to reduce recurrence rates for extensive ocular SCC.
