Context:

New Danish guidelines for prenatal risk assessment and diagnostic services were implemented in 2004.
The Danish National Board of Health (DNBH) emphasized quality control but provided no specific guidelines.
This study demonstrates a feasible quality assessment for a significant portion of the national screening program.

Purpose:

To assess the feasibility of a quality assessment program for prenatal screening.
To evaluate the effectiveness of the implemented prenatal screening guidelines.
To provide data supporting the establishment of a national quality control program.

Summary:

A 12-month quality assessment was conducted on 1796 singleton and 47 twin pregnancies at Holbaek Hospital.
Data from a local hospital database were merged with national registries for cytogenetics and newborn screening.
The study identified two cases of Down syndrome (DS) and one of trisomy 18, with a DS detection rate of 67%.

Impact:

The findings support the implementation of a national quality program for prenatal screening.
This quality assessment can enhance the accuracy and effectiveness of prenatal diagnostics.
The study provides a model for quality control in national screening programs, improving detection rates for fetal anomalies.
