Flow Cytometry01:23

Flow Cytometry

The development of flow cytometry techniques began in 1934 with initial attempts by Andrew Moldavan, a bacteriologist who counted the cells in a flowing capillary system. Moldavan pumped cells through a capillary tube focused under a microscope for visualization. The invention of photometry allowed the measurement of differentially-stained cells, and Louis Kamentsky developed the first multiparameter flow cytometer in 1965 to identify and count the cancer cells in cervical tissue specimens.

Area of Science:

  • Computer Science
  • Data Science
  • Network Engineering

Background:

  • Growing listmode data files generate significant network traffic, hindering remote access and analysis.
  • Limited modem transmission speeds make analyzing large datasets nearly impossible.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present a novel solution for efficient remote access and analysis of large listmode data files.
  • To introduce a Web servlet-based system that optimizes data transmission over networks.

Main Methods:

  • Installation of a Web servlet at the central data storage facility.
  • The servlet extracts display arrays from data files and organizes network transmission.
  • A remote client program receives and displays the organized data.

Main Results:

  • The implemented system significantly accelerates access to remotely stored data.
  • Data transmission efficiency was demonstrated using two typical large data files.
  • The system successfully retains the flexibility of local data manipulation.

Conclusions:

  • The Web servlet approach provides an effective solution to challenges posed by large listmode data files.
  • This method enhances remote data analysis capabilities without compromising data accessibility or flexibility.
