Purpose:
To evaluate the clinical usefulness of magnetic attachment in mandibular complete overdentures.
Methods:
Seventeen patients were treated with Magnetic EX retained mandibular complete overdentures. The maximal masticatory force, retention and masticatory efficiency of mandibular complete overdentures with 2 or 3 Magnetic EX attachments were investigated at different periods. SPSS13.5 software package was used for statistical analysis.
Results:
The results showed mandibular complete overdentures with magnetic attachments increased the masticatory force, retention and masticatory efficiency(P<0.01). Mandibular complete overdentures with 3 magnetic attachments provided better retention than those with 2 magnetic attachments (P<0.01), but the masticatory force and masticatory efficiency didn't increase significantly(P>0.05).
Conclusions:
Mandibular overdentures supported by magnetic attachments can be used to improve the maximal masticatory force, retention and masticatory efficiency. Mandibular overdenture with 2 magnetic attachment has more value in clinic.
