Brain Imaging

Brain imaging technologies provide critical insights into both the structure and function of the human brain, enabling medical professionals and researchers to diagnose, study, and treat neurological disorders or psychiatric disorders more effectively.
These technologies include computerized axial tomography (CAT or CT scans), positron-emission tomography (PET scans),  magnetic resonance imaging (MRI),  functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS).

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a treatment for neurological and psychiatric conditions. While initially used for pain, DBS is now standard for movement disorders like Parkinson's disease and shows promise for depression.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an established therapeutic modality for various neurological and psychiatric conditions.
  • Its application has evolved from pain management to the routine treatment of movement disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the current applications of DBS in treating neurological and psychiatric diseases.
  • To highlight the established efficacy in movement disorders and emerging potential in other conditions.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing literature on Deep Brain Stimulation applications.
  • Analysis of clinical outcomes in patients with movement disorders, chronic pain, and psychiatric conditions.

Main Results:

  • DBS is a standard treatment for Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, and dystonia.
  • Evidence suggests DBS is effective for treating depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Conclusions:

  • Deep brain stimulation is a versatile therapeutic approach for a range of neurological and psychiatric disorders.
  • Further research is warranted to fully elucidate the potential of DBS in treating conditions such as depression and OCD.
