A six-step behavioral cognitive method significantly improved oral hygiene self-efficacy and behaviors compared to traditional instruction. This method enhances patient confidence and adherence to better dental care practices.
Area of Science:
- Dental hygiene research
- Behavioral science in healthcare
- Periodontal disease management
Background:
- Chronic periodontitis requires effective patient self-care.
- Traditional oral hygiene instruction may have limitations in promoting sustained behavioral change.
- Novel behavioral interventions are needed to improve patient adherence and outcomes.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare the efficacy of a six-step behavioral cognitive method against traditional oral hygiene instruction.
- To evaluate the impact on patient self-efficacy and oral hygiene practices.
Main Methods:
- Thirty-eight chronic periodontitis patients were randomized into control (traditional instruction) and intervention (six-step method) groups.
- Instruction was provided weekly for three weeks.
- Clinical characteristics, plaque levels, brushing habits, interdental cleaning frequency, and self-efficacy scores were assessed.
Main Results:
- No baseline differences were observed between groups.
- The intervention group showed significantly higher self-efficacy, lower plaque index, longer brushing duration, and increased interdental cleaning frequency post-intervention.
- Toothbrushing duration was strongly associated with self-efficacy (p<0.001).
Conclusions:
- The six-step behavioral cognitive method appears more effective than traditional instruction for improving oral hygiene self-efficacy and promoting behavioral change.
- This approach offers a promising strategy for dentists and hygienists to enhance patient oral care adherence.
