[Contemporary concepts on metabolic abnormalities in critically ill patients]
Abstract:
The paper presents the data on the specific features of metabolic response of critically ill patients to stress. The mechanisms of the systemic inflammatory response to surgical abdominal infection have been studied. The nature and severity of protein, carbohydrate and fat metabolism impairments have been assessed in critical conditions. The author has shown that hypermetabolism in the patients under stress due to trauma or infection is associated with the increased muscular proteolysis, urea production in the liver, negative nitrogen balance and with the increased glucose production and fat mobilization.
