    Background:

    • Memory consolidation is a critical process for learning.
    • The role of neurotransmitters, particularly noradrenaline (NA), in memory is an area of active research.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the involvement of noradrenaline (NA) in the consolidation of conditioned avoidance response (CAR).
    • To determine the time window during which NA is essential for memory consolidation.

    Main Methods:

    • Rats were trained in a shuttle box avoidance task.
    • Post-training administration of alpha-methyl tyrosine (alpha-MT), a tyrosine hydroxylase inhibitor, to deplete NA.
    • Administration of DL-Dopa, a precursor to dopamine and NA, at various time points after alpha-MT.
    • Assessment of retention of the conditioned avoidance response (CAR).
    • Investigation of sex differences in response to alpha-MT.

    Main Results:

    • Alpha-methyl tyrosine (alpha-MT) administered immediately after training impaired retention of the conditioned avoidance response (CAR).
    • DL-Dopa administration effectively counteracted the amnesic effect of alpha-MT when given within 2 hours post-training.
    • Diethyldithiocarbamate (DDC), another NA synthesis inhibitor, also impaired CAR retention at a high dose.
    • Alpha-MT impaired memory in female rats but not in males after passive avoidance training.

    Conclusions:

    • Noradrenaline (NA) plays a crucial role in the consolidation of memory for conditioned avoidance responses.
    • The critical period for NA involvement in memory consolidation appears to be approximately 2 hours post-training.
    • These findings highlight the importance of NA in the immediate post-learning period for memory formation.
