1Klinika dĕtí a dorostu fakultní nemocnice, Praha.
Insights
This study establishes normal thyroid gland volume ranges in 245 healthy children aged 5 days to 18 years using sonography. Findings correlate thyroid volume with child
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Endocrinology
- Diagnostic Imaging
- Thyroid Ultrasound
Background:
- Establishing normative data for thyroid gland volume is crucial for pediatric health assessments.
- Sonographic evaluation is a non-invasive method for measuring thyroid dimensions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine reference ranges for thyroid gland volume in healthy children.
- To correlate thyroid volume with anthropometric parameters like age, height, and weight.
Main Methods:
- Sonographic examinations were performed on 245 healthy children aged 5 days to 18 years.
- Thyroid volume was calculated using Brunn's formula.
- Children were assessed for health via case history, clinical examination, and biochemical tests (for neonates).
Main Results:
- Normal values for thyroid gland volume were established for different pediatric age groups.
- Thyroid volume demonstrated correlations with age, height, and weight.
- Results are presented in a comprehensive table for clinical reference.
Conclusions:
- This study provides essential normative sonographic data for thyroid gland volume in children.
- The established ranges aid in the accurate interpretation of thyroid size in pediatric patients.
- Findings support the use of ultrasound in routine pediatric thyroid assessments.
Abstract:
In 245 healthy children from Prague 10 sonographic examinations of the thyroid were made to assess normal values of the volume of the thyroid gland. The children were 5 days to 18 years old, healthy according to the case-history and clinical examination, and neonates also according to biochemical tests. The volume was calculated according to Brunn's formula, i. e. a. b. c. 0.479 (1). The results were compared with age, height and weight of the examined children and are presented in a table.
