Skull base chondrosarcomas, rare tumors, pose surgical challenges. This case study highlights successful treatment of a skull base chondrosarcoma using the CyberKnife system, offering a viable alternative for difficult-to-resect tumors.

Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Oncology
  • Radiation Oncology

Background:

  • Skull base chondrosarcomas are rare, accounting for 2% of all chondrosarcomas.
  • These tumors typically exhibit low-grade malignancy, with complete resection offering a potential cure.
  • However, surgical access to skull base tumors is often challenging, rendering them irresectable and necessitating alternative treatments.

Observation:

  • A 54-year-old male presented with a several-week history of diplopia.
  • Diagnostic imaging confirmed a diagnosis of skull base chondrosarcoma.
  • The patient was subsequently treated using the CyberKnife system.

Findings:

  • The CyberKnife system provided a treatment option for a challenging skull base chondrosarcoma.
  • This approach was employed due to the tumor's location and presumed irresectability via traditional surgical methods.

  • A review of radiosurgery techniques for skull base neoplasms was conducted in conjunction with this case.
  • Implications:

    • Stereotactic radiosurgery, exemplified by the CyberKnife system, offers a promising treatment modality for skull base chondrosarcomas.
    • This technology may provide a less invasive and effective alternative for patients with tumors considered surgically inaccessible.
    • Further research into radiosurgery techniques is warranted to optimize outcomes for skull base neoplasms.
