Thiotropolone as a chromogenic reagent for the simultaneous determination of cobalt(II) and nickel(II)
1Department of Chemistry, University of Delhi, Delhi-7, India.
Abstract:
Thiotropolone forms chloroform-soluble reddish-brown and violet complexes with cobalt(II) and nickel(II), in the pH range 7.0-8.5 and 6.0-9.0 respectively. Based on this, a sensitive and rapid method for the spectrophotometric determination of traces of cobalt and nickel in metals and alloys has been developed. The two metals can be determined accurately in the range 0.6-2.6 ppm of cobalt and 0.75-4.57 ppm of nickel, simultaneously.

EDTA: Direct, Back-, and Displacement Titration
Direct titration involves buffering the metal ion solution to the desired pH and directly titrating with standard EDTA until the endpoint. The optimum pH ensures a large conditional formation constant of metal−EDTA and visibility of the free indicator color in the solution. In addition, auxiliary complexing reagents are used to prevent the precipitation of metal hydroxides and...
Effects of EDTA on End-Point Detection Methods
In the visual method, metal-ion indicators (metallochromic dyes), which have distinct colors in their free and complex forms, are added to the mixture to signal the titration's end point. They form stable complexes with metal ions, but these complexes are weaker than the corresponding metal–EDTA complexes. As a result, EDTA...

Precipitation Gravimetry
In determining nickel by gravimetric analysis, a precipitant of ethanolic dimethylglyoxime is added to a hot nickel salt solution. This is quickly followed by the dropwise addition of dilute ammonia solution until precipitation occurs. A...
