A novel cesium-selective electrode was developed using a thiacalix[4]biscrown ether ionophore. This electrode demonstrates high selectivity and a wide linear response range for cesium detection.
Area of Science:
- Chemical Sensing
- Analytical Chemistry
- Materials Science
Background:
- Thiacalix[4]biscrown ethers are macrocyclic compounds with potential applications in ion sensing.
- Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) membrane electrodes are widely used for potentiometric ion detection.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the potentiometric responses of four thiacalix[4]biscrown ethers in PVC membrane electrodes.
- To develop a highly selective electrode for cesium (Cs+) detection.
Main Methods:
- Synthesis and characterization of thiacalix[4]biscrown ethers with 1,3-alternate conformation.
- Fabrication of PVC membrane electrodes incorporating the synthesized ionophores.
- Potentiometric selectivity measurements using the fixed interference method (FIM) for various metal ions.
Main Results:
- 1,3-alternate thiacalix[4]biscrown-6,6 exhibited superior selectivity for Cs+ over potassium (K+) and other ions.
- The optimized Cs+-selective electrode showed a near-Nernstian slope (57.6 mV/decade) over a wide concentration range (1.0x10^-6 to 3.2x10^-2 M).
- The electrode performed effectively in aqueous solutions across a broad pH range (2.5-12.5) with a rapid response time (approx. 5s).
Conclusions:
- 1,3-alternate thiacalix[4]biscrown-6,6 is a highly effective ionophore for developing Cs+-selective electrodes.
- The developed electrode offers significant advantages in terms of selectivity, linear range, and operational stability compared to previously reported sensors.

Conjugated systems containing an even number of π-electron pairs undergo a conrotatory ring closure. For example, thermal electrocyclization of (2E,4E)-2,4-hexadiene, a conjugated diene containing two π-electron pairs, gives trans-3,4-dimethylcyclobutene.
