Fresh and processed Gekko subpalmatus demonstrated significant anticancer effects against mouse H22 hepatocellular carcinoma. Processed samples also showed potential to enhance immune function in mice.

Area of Science:

  • Pharmacology
  • Immunology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains a significant global health challenge.
  • Exploring novel therapeutic agents for HCC is crucial.
  • Gekko subpalmatus is traditionally used, but its scientific validation for anticancer activity is limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To comparatively evaluate the in vitro and in vivo anticancer efficacy of fresh and processed Gekko subpalmatus against mouse H22 hepatocellular carcinoma.
  • To assess the impact of Gekko subpalmatus on immune parameters.

Main Methods:

  • In vitro cytotoxicity was assessed using the Monotetrazolium (MTT) assay.
  • An in vivo mouse model of transplanted hepatoma H22 was established.
  • Tumor growth inhibition rates and thymus/spleen indices were measured after 14 days of treatment.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Both fresh and processed Gekko subpalmatus inhibited H22 cell proliferation in vitro, with IC50 values of 8.53 mg/ml and 6.42 mg/ml, respectively.
  • In vivo, highest doses achieved tumor restraining rates of 53.0% (fresh) and 47.4% (processed).
  • Processed Gekko subpalmatus treatment significantly increased thymus and spleen indices compared to the CTX group, suggesting immunomodulatory effects.

Conclusions:

  • Gekko subpalmatus, in both fresh and processed forms, exhibits significant anti-tumor activity against hepatocellular carcinoma cells.
  • Processed Gekko subpalmatus demonstrates potential in improving host immunity, offering a dual therapeutic approach.
