The female breast is a hemispheric projection of variable size positioned anterior to the pectoralis major and serratus anterior muscles. A fascia layer composed of dense, irregular connective tissue connects it to these muscles.

Summary

Breastfeeding is possible despite congenital and acquired breast malformations. With counseling and support, mothers with conditions like ectopic breasts or burn scars can successfully nurse their babies.

Background:

Breast malformations, both congenital and acquired, can pose challenges to successful breastfeeding.
Maternal psychological barriers can also impede lactation, even without physical malformations.

Observation:

Three mothers of Indian origin with distinct breast malformations were studied.
One mother had bilateral ectopic axillary breasts; two had chest/breast burn scars, one with a flat nipple.

Findings:

All three mothers successfully breastfed their infants with appropriate interventions.
The mother with ectopic breasts utilized milk expression.
The mothers with burn scars received counseling and practical assistance, overcoming psychological barriers.

Implications:

Breastfeeding is achievable for mothers with various breast malformations.
Counseling and practical support are crucial for overcoming lactation challenges.
Addressing psychological factors is as important as managing physical impediments to breastfeeding.
