  • Accurate and early diagnosis of PTB is crucial for effective treatment and control.
  • High Resolution Computed Tomography (HRCT) offers detailed imaging of lung parenchyma.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify and characterize the common HRCT patterns in adult patients with newly diagnosed, Acid Fast Bacillus (AFB) positive Pulmonary Tuberculosis (PTB).

Main Methods:

  • A descriptive case series study was conducted.
  • Fifty adult patients with AFB-positive new PTB were included.
  • HRCT of the chest was performed using 2 mm collimation at 10 mm intervals.

Main Results:

  • The most frequent HRCT findings included centrilobular nodules (92%), lobular consolidation (84%), and cavitation (76%).
  • Common HRCT patterns observed were centrilobular nodules with lobular consolidation (80%), centrilobular nodules with cavitation (72%), and centrilobular nodules with 'tree-in-bud' appearance (68%).

Conclusions:

  • Centrilobular nodules and lobular consolidations represent a hallmark HRCT pattern in new PTB cases.
  • HRCT findings like centrilobular nodules with cavitation and 'tree-in-bud' appearance are highly prevalent.
  • These characteristic HRCT patterns are valuable for the diagnosis of new pulmonary tuberculosis in adults.
