Summary

Hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) suppresses the immune system. This study found that reduced interleukin-1 (IL-1) production is a key mechanism behind HBO's immunosuppressive effects in mice.

  • To assess the impact of HBO on interleukin-1 (IL-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production, and macrophage phagocytosis.

  • Mice were treated with hyperbaric oxygenation.
  • Production of IL-1, IL-6, and PGE2 by splenic macrophages was measured.
  • Phagocytotic activity of splenic macrophages was assessed.
