This study presents an automated method for combining healthcare interoperability profiles. It simplifies complex integration scenarios by generating overall business processes from grouped actors, saving significant manual effort.
Area of Science:
- Health Informatics
- Computer Science
Background:
- Integrating Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) profiles facilitate healthcare information interoperability.
- Combining IHE profiles for complex scenarios requires choreography of business processes and transaction sequencing.
- Manual determination of transaction precedence for IHE profile combinations is tedious and error-prone.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop an automated method for generating overall business processes when IHE actors are grouped.
- To simplify the combination of multiple IHE profiles for complex healthcare interoperability use cases.
Main Methods:
- Representing IHE profiles using the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS) ebusiness eXtensible Markup Language (ebXML) Business Process Specification (ebBP) Language.
- Defining machine-processable precedence rules for transactions within IHE profiles.
- Developing a graphical tool for users to select actors for grouping and automatically generate the business process.
Main Results:
- An automated approach to derive overall business processes from grouped IHE actors.
- Machine-processable representation of IHE profiles and transaction precedence rules.
- A graphical tool enabling automatic generation of combined business processes.
Conclusions:
- Automating the combination of IHE profiles significantly reduces manual effort in defining complex interoperability scenarios.
- The proposed method using ebXML ebBP language and a graphical tool enhances the efficiency of healthcare system integration.
- This approach facilitates flexible and scalable integration of diverse healthcare information resources.
