Area of Science:

  • Nursing Research
  • Gender Studies
  • Feminist Theory

Background:

  • Historically, gender categories have limited and marginalized women.
  • Nursing research has the potential to either reinforce or challenge these gender norms.

Observation:

  • Feminist research utilizing a strict male/female or man/woman dichotomy may perpetuate damaging social relations.
  • Theorizing about gender in nursing requires careful consideration of analytical frameworks.

Findings:

  • Binary gender categorizations in research risk reproducing societal inequalities.
  • Deconstructing gender dichotomies offers a path toward more equitable nursing research.

Implications:

  • Nursing research must adopt nuanced approaches to gender to avoid reinforcing harmful stereotypes.
