Major abdominal surgery significantly increases serum levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF). These elevated angiogenic growth factors may promote residual tumor growth post-surgery.

- Elevated postoperative growth factor levels appear to be part of normal wound healing and systemic inflammation.
- The proangiogenic potential of these factors may contribute to accelerated tumor growth in residual micrometastases.
