Background:

Growing patient use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) impacts doctor-patient dialogue.
Patients anticipate primary care physicians (PCPs) can refer them to CAM practitioners.
A practical referral process for CAM is currently unavailable.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and validate a practical tool for physicians considering CAM referrals.
To assess the tool's utility in primary care settings.

Main Methods:

An 11-item questionnaire was created for physicians to evaluate CAM referrals.
The questionnaire covers biopsychosocial factors, communication, safety, and modality effectiveness.
The tool was distributed to PCPs and CAM practitioners via mail and email.

Main Results:

The CAM referral tool demonstrated significant utility in primary care.
High reliability and validity were confirmed among PCPs (Cronbach's alpha = 0.867, rho = 0.2-0.67).
Moderate reliability was observed among CAM practitioners (Cronbach's alpha = 0.745).

Conclusions:

The developed CAM referral tool is useful for primary care physicians.
This tool can facilitate the integration of CAM with conventional medicine.
Further research may enhance the adoption of integrated care models.
