Natural killer T (NKT) cells, crucial for immune regulation, decline during simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) and simian/human immunodeficiency virus (SHIV) infections in macaques. This depletion, particularly of CD4(+) NKT cells, correlates with disease progression and viral load.
