Multiple Sclerosis l: Introduction

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic autoimmune disease of the central nervous system (CNS) that affects the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. It is an inflammatory demyelinating disorder and a leading cause of neurological disability in young adults.EpidemiologyMS commonly begins between 20 and 40 years of age and is twice as common in women. Its exact cause remains unclear, but genetic susceptibility contributes, with higher risk in first-degree relatives and identical twins. A greater...
Cryptococcal Meningitis01:27

Cryptococcal Meningitis

Cryptococcal meningitis is a life-threatening opportunistic infection predominantly associated with HIV/AIDS, accounting for over 100,000 deaths annually worldwide. However, it also affects individuals with other forms of immunosuppression, including those undergoing immunosuppressive therapy, organ transplant recipients, patients with innate immunodeficiencies, and individuals with hematological disorders. The infection is caused mainly by Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii,...

Summary

Choroiditis, an inflammation of the choroid, may occur in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. This case report details a patient with MS who experienced choroiditis, with symptoms resolving after treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Neurology

Background:

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease affecting the central nervous system.
  • Ocular manifestations in MS are common, but choroiditis is less frequently reported.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe a case of choroiditis in a patient diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
  • To analyze the clinical presentation, diagnostic findings, and treatment response of MS-associated choroiditis.

Main Methods:

  • A case report detailing a 50-year-old male with MS presenting with ocular symptoms.
  • Diagnostic methods included clinical examination, fluorescein angiography (FA), and optical coherence tomography (OCT).

Main Results:

  • The patient presented with vitritis and multiple choroidal lesions in both eyes.

  • FA showed early hyperfluorescence and late leakage; OCT revealed subretinal fluid.
  • Following treatment, visual acuity returned to baseline, with resolution of subretinal fluid and reduced FA leakage.
  • Conclusions:

    • Choroiditis can be a potential ocular manifestation in patients with multiple sclerosis.
    • The relationship between choroiditis and MS requires further investigation, as it may also represent an incidental finding.
