Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Surgical Procedures

Background:

  • Sural nerve biopsy is a common diagnostic procedure.
  • Existing techniques may have limitations in outpatient settings.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe an adapted technique for outpatient sural nerve biopsy.
  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of this adapted procedure.

Main Methods:

  • Chart review of 12 patients undergoing the adapted sural nerve biopsy.
  • Procedure performed in an operating room under local anesthesia with IV sedation.
  • Follow-up ranging from 6 to 26 months.

Main Results:

  • Only one complication (delayed wound healing) was noted in a steroid-dependent patient.
  • The adapted technique demonstrated very low morbidity.
