Summary

Modafinil (MOD) and motor-evoked brain excitability training (MBET) normalized H-reflex depression after spinal cord injury (SCI). However, neither treatment altered Connexin 36 (Cx-36) protein levels in the lumbar enlargement.

  • Adult female rats underwent complete spinal cord transection at the T10 level.
  • H-reflex testing was conducted 30 days post-transection in untreated, MOD-treated, and MBET-trained groups.
  • Lumbar enlargement tissue was collected for Western blot analysis following immunoprecipitation to assess Cx-36 protein levels.

Main Results:

  • Both MOD and MBET treatments resulted in statistically significant reductions in the low-frequency-dependent depression of the H-reflex compared to the untreated Tx group.
  • No statistically significant changes in Cx-36 protein levels were detected in the MOD-treated group relative to the untreated Tx group.

Conclusions:

  • Oral administration of Modafinil and motor-evoked brain excitability training effectively normalized the H-reflex depression indicative of hyperreflexia post-SCI.
  • Further research is warranted to explore potential regional changes in Cx-36 protein expression within specific spinal cord subregions.
