Area of Science:

  • Aesthetic Medicine
  • Facial Aesthetics
  • Neuromodulation

Background:

  • Botulinum toxin is established for mandibular angle aesthetic reshaping in East Asians.
  • Its efficacy in Western populations for this purpose was previously uninvestigated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess botulinum toxin efficacy for lower face aesthetic reshaping in Westerners.
  • To compare these outcomes with those in East Asian populations.

Main Methods:

  • 34 Western patients received 25-30 units of botulinum toxin per side.
  • 48 East Asian patients received 40 units of botulinum toxin per side.
  • Efficacy and complications were evaluated.

Main Results:

  • All patients experienced aesthetic improvement in lower face shape.
  • Western patients also showed functional improvement for bruxism.
  • Lower therapeutic doses were needed for Westerners compared to East Asians.
  • Aesthetic results lasted 9-12 months; functional benefits lasted 6-7 months.

Conclusions:

  • Botulinum toxin is effective for aesthetic and functional improvement in Western patients with masseteric hypertrophy.
  • The treatment offers a safe and viable option for facial contouring.
