Tonsillitis II: Management01:26

Tonsillitis II: Management

This lesson will focus on the different treatment options for managing tonsillitis, which typically depend on the cause and severity.
Pneumonia V: Nursing management and Prevention01:30

Pneumonia V: Nursing management and Prevention

Nursing management of pneumonia involves promoting airway patency, facilitating rest and conserving energy, encouraging fluid intake, maintaining nutrition, and educating patients.
The nurse must practice strict medical asepsis and adhere to infection control guidelines to minimize healthcare-associated infections.
Enhance airway patency
Position the patient correctly to facilitate drainage of the affected lung segments. Manual or mechanical percussion and vibration can also be employed.
Chronic Pharyngitis01:23

Chronic Pharyngitis

Chronic pharyngitis refers to persistent inflammation of the pharyngial mucosa.
Etiology
It often arises from persistent viral or bacterial infections affecting sinuses and tonsils.
Additional contributing factors include inadequate dental hygiene, mouth breathing, recurring tonsillitis, allergic rhinitis, laryngopharyngeal reflux, and exposure to smoke, chemicals, and other environmental pollutants. Allergic reactions to pollen, mold, and pet dander, chronic cough, excessive voice usage,...
Healthcare Associated Infections II: Preventive Measures01:22

Healthcare Associated Infections II: Preventive Measures

Essential infection prevention measures are based on the knowledge of the infection chain, the modes of transmission in healthcare settings, and the use of the best practices in all healthcare settings. Compulsory public reporting of healthcare-associated infection rates is needed to allow individuals and the community to make informed choices regarding selecting a healthcare facility.
The best practices for preventing healthcare-associated infections include hand hygiene, patient risk...

Mitral Stenosis III: Medical Management

Mitral stenosis, a condition marked by the narrowing of the mitral valve, necessitates an integrated approach for effective management. This approach includes preventative measures, medical therapy, and surgical interventions to reduce symptoms and prevent complications.PreventionPrevention of mitral stenosis primarily focuses on reducing the incidence of bacterial infections, particularly streptococcal infections, which can lead to rheumatic fever and subsequent valvular damage. Timely...
Tonsillitis I: Introduction01:30

Tonsillitis I: Introduction

Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils, which are two lymphoid tissue masses at the back of the throat. This condition can cause discomfort and irritation in the throat.
Etiology
Three primary contributing factors have been identified.

Summary

Otitis media (OM) may soon be preventable with vaccines. A new vaccine prototype targeting Non-typable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) and Streptococcus pneumoniae shows promising results, suggesting OM could become a vaccine-preventable disease.

Area of Science:

  • Infectious Disease Epidemiology
  • Vaccinology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Otitis media (OM) causes significant morbidity globally.
  • Non-typable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) and Streptococcus pneumoniae are the primary causative agents, responsible for ~80% of OM cases.
  • Current alternatives for preventing OM are limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the potential of a novel vaccine prototype for preventing otitis media.
  • To assess the feasibility of classifying otitis media as a vaccine-preventable disease.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of early clinical trial data for a vaccine prototype.
  • Comparative interpretation of trial results with existing studies.
  • Health-economic and policy considerations analysis.

Main Results:

  • Early trial data suggest a vaccine prototype including NTHi and 11 pneumococcal serotypes is effective.
  • Otitis media is indicated as a potentially vaccine-preventable disease.
  • Provisional health-economic and policy analyses favor vaccination.

Conclusions:

  • Vaccination represents a promising strategy for the prevention of otitis media.
  • The development of vaccines against NTHi and Streptococcus pneumoniae could significantly reduce the global burden of OM.
  • Despite varying country-specific factors, vaccination is a favored approach for OM prevention.
