Summary

Simultaneous surgery for bilateral congenital cataracts is effective for a broader patient group, not just those at high anesthesiologic risk. This approach offers a viable option for improving visual outcomes in infants.

Data collected from 1990 to 2005 at the University Federico II of Naples.

Main Results:

Mean age at surgery was 7 months; visual acuity outcomes varied, with 44% achieving 20/40 or better.
Ocular motility disorders were present in 70% of patients.
Postoperative complications included secondary membranes (5 patients) and glaucoma (3 patients); no endophthalmitis occurred.

Conclusions:

Simultaneous bilateral congenital cataract surgery is a feasible option for a wider patient population.
The procedure demonstrates acceptable outcomes and safety profiles.
Consideration for this surgical approach can be extended beyond high-risk anesthetic cases.
