Blinding is a commonly used method of not telling participants which treatment a subject is receiving. Blinding is a critical part of a randomized control trial or RCT. It reduces the bias that affects the results. In an RCT, blinding is used in the form of a placebo. A placebo effect occurs when untreated subjects falsely believe they have received the treatment and report improved symptoms. A placebo or a dummy treatment is administered to subjects to negate the bias caused by such an effect.

  • Orthopaedic surgeons showed significantly poorer ECG interpretation skills than internal physicians (median scores 2 vs. 4, p < 0.01).
  • Total ECG scores were substantially lower for orthopaedic surgeons (71) compared to physicians (124, p < 0.01).
  • The orthopaedic group had a higher proportion of males (28 vs. 17).

Conclusions:

  • ECG interpretation skills are less developed in orthopaedic surgeons compared to internal physicians.
  • Educational interventions focused on ECG interpretation are recommended for orthopaedic surgeons.
  • Increasing the enrollment of female orthopaedic surgeons may potentially enhance ECG proficiency within the specialty.
