Summary

Tuberculosis (TB) in healthcare workers (HCWs) is often work-related, particularly in specific high-risk settings. New findings suggest reconsidering prevention strategies for TB infection in German HCWs.

Recent studies in Germany and the Netherlands reveal a significant proportion of tuberculosis (TB) cases in healthcare workers (HCWs) are work-related.
Traditional high-risk areas like TB wards and laboratories are not the only concern; paramedics, emergency rooms, and care for high-risk populations also pose infection risks.

Purpose:

To reassess the understanding of TB infection risks for HCWs in Germany.
To evaluate the prevalence of latent TB infection (LTBI) using interferon-gamma release assays (IGRA).
To inform the revision of occupational disease recognition and prevention strategies.

Summary:

Molecular-epidemiological data indicate that a substantial percentage of TB cases in HCWs stem from workplace infections, challenging previous assumptions.
