Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy of digital photographs and graphic computer software for shade matching against conventional visual methods.
  • To assess the reliability and accuracy of different shade matching techniques.

Main Methods:

  • Nine observers matched shades using a Vita 3D-Master Guide under simulated clinical conditions.
  • Shade matching was performed visually and with digital photographs.
  • Graphic software analyzed digital images using the CIE L*C*h* color system to calculate color differences.

Main Results:

  • Computer software achieved an 8/12 (67%) correct match rate.
  • Visual methods yielded significantly lower correct match rates (32% in clinic, 28% with photos).
  • No correlation was found between time spent and accuracy for visual methods.

Conclusions:

  • Digital shade matching assisted by computer software is significantly more reliable than conventional visual techniques.
  • This technology enhances precision in dental color selection.
