Smoking habits in secondary school students
Adolescent smoking is prevalent, with many unaware of risks despite believing they are informed. Parental and peer influence significantly impacts teen smoking habits and nicotine dependence.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Adolescent Health
- Tobacco Control
Background:
- Smoking poses significant health risks, contributing to mortality and morbidity.
- Adolescence is a critical period for the initiation of smoking behaviors.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate adolescent knowledge of smoking risks and their smoking habits.
- To identify factors influencing smoking initiation in teenagers.
Main Methods:
- A confidential, self-administered questionnaire was used.
- Data collected from 1,770 students (aged 11-21) in four Porto schools.
- Statistical analysis performed using SPSS (version 1.2, 2004).
Main Results:
- Over 11% of students were smokers, starting around age 15.
- Most students lacked awareness of school smoking warnings and could not list multiple tobacco-related health consequences.
- Parental and peer smoking habits were strongly associated with adolescent smoking (p < 0.001).
Conclusions:
- A considerable percentage of adolescents were smokers, with signs of nicotine dependence.
- School-based smoking information had limited impact; parental and peer behaviors were influential.
- Targeted interventions addressing social influences are needed to curb adolescent smoking.
