Summary

This case report details a rare parotid dermoid cyst in a 69-year-old man. Fine needle aspiration cytology aided in diagnosing this uncommon head and neck lesion.

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Dermoid cysts are congenital tumors containing epidermal and dermal appendages.
  • While common in the head and neck, parotid gland dermoid cysts are exceptionally rare.

Observation:

  • A 69-year-old male presented with a slow-growing mass in the left parotid gland.
  • Pre-operative assessments included fine needle aspiration cytology and computed tomography.
  • Surgical excision revealed a superficial lobectomy specimen consistent with a dermoid cyst.

Findings:

  • Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of a parotid dermoid cyst.
  • This represents one of the few documented cases in the English literature.
  • The study highlights the diagnostic utility of fine needle aspiration cytology.

Implications:

  • Early and accurate diagnosis of parotid dermoid cysts is crucial.
  • Fine needle aspiration cytology can identify key features suggestive of this rare entity.
  • Increased awareness may improve diagnostic rates for parotid dermoid cysts.
