Background:

Recent research indicates cultural differences in motivation: North Americans tend towards approach motivations, whereas East Asians lean towards avoidance motivations.
This study investigates the cognitive consequences of these distinct motivational orientations across cultures.

Purpose of the Study:

To examine how cultural differences in approach-avoidance motivations affect attentional processes.
To test the hypothesis that North Americans are more attentive to approach-oriented information and East Asians to avoidance-oriented information.

Main Methods:

Three studies were conducted to test the hypothesis.
Study 1 and 2 involved participants recalling information presented in approach or avoidance frames.
Study 3 analyzed the content of helpful consumer book reviews from American and Japanese sources.

Main Results:

A significant interaction between culture and information frame was observed in recall tasks, supporting the hypothesis.
American reviews featured more approach-focused content, while Japanese reviews contained more avoidance-focused content among helpful reviews.
