Migraine significantly worsens somatic symptoms in major depressive disorder (MDD) patients. This study highlights migraine as a key predictor of these symptoms, independent of anxiety. Future research should consider this comorbidity.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Neurology
- Clinical Psychology
Background:
- Somatic symptoms in major depressive disorder (MDD) are often overlooked.
- The comorbidity of migraine and its impact on MDD somatic symptoms requires further investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare the influence of migraine and anxiety comorbidities on somatic symptoms in MDD patients.
- To identify the most significant comorbidities predicting somatic symptom severity in MDD.
Main Methods:
- 155 psychiatric outpatients with MDD were assessed using structured interviews (DSM-IV-TR) and diagnostic criteria (ICD-10).
- Validated scales measured depression, somatic symptoms, and anxiety (e.g., HAM-D, DSS, SCL-90-R, HADS).
- Multiple linear regression analyses were employed to determine predictive factors for somatic symptom severity.
Main Results:
- Patients with migraine exhibited higher somatic, depression, and anxiety severity.
- Panic disorder was a significant predictor among anxiety comorbidities.
- Migraine emerged as the strongest independent predictor of somatic symptom severity in MDD (R² change=0.28, p<.01), even after controlling for other factors.
Conclusions:
- Migraine comorbidity is strongly associated with increased somatic symptoms in MDD patients.
- Migraine is a robust, independent predictor of somatic symptom severity in MDD.
- Future research on MDD somatic symptoms should incorporate migraine as a critical factor.
