    • To assess the reliability and validity of two distinct taxonomic schemes for classifying nursing research abstracts.

    • A review and independent classification of 811 nursing research abstracts from a national conference (1983, 1987, 1989).
    • Utilized two classification systems: Sigma Theta Tau International Directory of Nurse Researchers (STT) and Classification of Nursing-Related Dissertations (DISSER).
    • Assessed inter-rater reliability among three investigators for each taxonomy.

    Main Results:

    • Over half of the abstracts focused on clinical nursing topics, with a significant upward trend observed over the study period (p < .001).
    • Inter-rater agreement was higher for the DISSER scheme (70.9%) compared to the STT scheme (62.8%) (p < .01).
