Background:

  • Skeletal muscle wasting is a common complication in critically-ill patients.
  • Previous attributions include catabolic fiber atrophy and neuropathy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the occurrence and characteristics of necrotizing myopathy in critically-ill patients.
  • To investigate potential contributing factors and clinical implications of this myopathy.

Main Methods:

  • Percutaneous biopsies of tibialis anterior muscles were taken from 31 critically-ill patients.
  • Serial biopsies were performed on 12 patients.
  • Immunohistochemistry was used to detect myoglobin casts in renal tubules.
