Pelvic reconstructive surgery is safe and effective for renal transplant recipients experiencing pelvic floor disorders. All patients in this study were successfully treated for prolapse and incontinence without complications.
Area of Science:
- Urology
- Nephrology
- Gynecology
Background:
- Renal transplantation is a common procedure for end-stage renal disease.
- Pelvic floor disorders, including stress incontinence and prolapse, can affect women post-transplantation.
- Surgical correction may be necessary for these conditions.
Observation:
- A retrospective review included five renal transplant patients who underwent pelvic reconstructive surgery.
- Procedures performed included vaginal hysterectomies with vault suspension, anterior and posterior repairs, and midurethral slings.
- Follow-up data assessed surgical outcomes and complications.
Findings:
- All five patients achieved successful outcomes, with complete resolution of prolapse and incontinence.
- No intraoperative or postoperative complications were reported.
- No evidence of synthetic mesh issues such as infection, rejection, or erosion was observed during follow-up.
Implications:
- Pelvic reconstructive surgery appears to be a safe and effective treatment option for renal transplant recipients.
- These findings support the consideration of surgical intervention for pelvic floor disorders in this patient population.
- Further research can explore long-term outcomes and specific surgical techniques in renal transplant recipients.
