Sexual stimulation can take various forms, such as physical touch and visual or auditory cues. When this happens, the parasympathetic reflex in the sacral portion of the spinal cord is activated. This reflex stimulates the release of nitric oxide (NO), which then dilates the arterioles in the penis, increasing blood flow to the erectile tissues - the corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum.

Summary

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections improved sexual function in premenopausal women. This study found PRP enhanced desire, arousal, lubrication, and orgasm compared to saline placebo.

Background:

Female sexual dysfunction is a common concern impacting quality of life.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is being explored for its regenerative properties in various medical fields.
Limited research exists on PRP's efficacy for improving sexual function in women.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the effectiveness of anterior vaginal wall injections of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) compared to a saline placebo.
To assess changes in sexual function using the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) and Patient Global Impression of Improvement (PGI-I) scores.

Main Methods:

A pilot, single-center, single-blind, randomized controlled trial was conducted.
Sexually active premenopausal women (18-50 years) without severe sexual dysfunction received one-time injections of PRP or saline into the anterior vaginal wall.
Follow-up was conducted for 6 months, with the primary outcome measured at 6 weeks.

Main Results:

Women receiving PRP showed a greater increase in total FSFI scores at 6 weeks and 6 months compared to the control group (P=.05 at 6 months).
While PRP improved FSFI subscale scores for desire, arousal, lubrication, and orgasm, these differences were not statistically significant compared to control.
A significantly higher percentage of women in the PRP group reported improved sexual function per PGI-I at 6 weeks (69.2% vs 42.3%) and 6 months (69.2% vs 34.6%).
No serious adverse events were reported.

Conclusions:

Anterior vaginal wall PRP injections demonstrate a greater improvement in sexual function compared to saline placebo in sexually active premenopausal women.
PRP injections offer a promising therapeutic option for enhancing female sexual function.
Further research is warranted to confirm these findings in larger populations.
