Summary

Kidney transplants using IGL-1 preservation solution showed improved early kidney function compared to University of Wisconsin (UW) solution. However, long-term graft survival and rejection rates were similar between the two preservation solutions.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy of IGL-1 solution versus UW solution for kidney preservation.
  • To evaluate early and long-term outcomes of kidney transplantation.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study comparing 121 patients receiving kidneys preserved in IGL-1 solution to 102 patients receiving kidneys preserved in UW solution.
  • Evaluation of serum creatinine, creatinine clearance, delayed graft function (DGF), rejection episodes, and patient/graft survival in the first post-transplant year.

Main Results:

  • IGL-1 group demonstrated significantly lower median serum creatinine levels from day 6 to 14 and more rapid creatinine decrease.
  • Higher creatinine clearance values were observed in the IGL-1 group during the initial 15 days post-transplant.
  • No significant differences were found in DGF, rejection rates, or patient/graft survival between the IGL-1 and UW groups during the follow-up period.

Conclusions:

  • Kidneys preserved in IGL-1 solution exhibit comparable long-term function and survival rates to those preserved in UW solution.
  • IGL-1 solution may offer advantages in early post-transplant kidney function recovery.
