Area of Science:

  • Biomaterials
  • Digital Dentistry
  • Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM)

Background:

  • Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology has limited application in removable denture fabrication.
  • A key barrier is the absence of reliable and affordable scanner technology for this purpose.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a cost-effective 3D digitization method for acquiring spatial data of edentulous jaws.
  • To overcome the economic and technical limitations of current scanner technologies in removable prosthodontics.

Main Methods:

  • A novel 3D scanning approach utilizing standard industrial components.
  • Employing Dense Stereo Matching on three images captured from different perspectives.
  • Analyzing the inherent optical structure of dental impressions for data acquisition.

Main Results:

  • Successful spatial acquisition of edentulous jaw impressions using the developed low-cost scanner.
  • Demonstration of a viable method for 3D digitization based on impression surface analysis.

Conclusions:

  • The developed 3D digitization method offers an economically acceptable solution for removable denture CAD/CAM.
  • This technology has the potential to increase the adoption of CAD/CAM in removable prosthodontics.
