Chronic smoking significantly increases arterial stiffness and endothelial dysfunction in young adults. Even short-term smoking negatively impacts vascular health, as shown by elevated stiffness index and reflection index.
Area of Science:
- Cardiovascular Physiology
- Vascular Biology
- Tobacco Research
Background:
- Arterial stiffness is a key indicator of cardiovascular health.
- Smoking is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases.
- Understanding early vascular changes in smokers is crucial for prevention.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the impact of chronic smoking on peripheral arterial stiffness.
- To evaluate specific pulse wave analysis parameters in young smokers versus non-smokers.
Main Methods:
- Pulse wave analysis was used to assess arterial stiffness in 42 non-smokers and 45 smokers.
- Evaluated parameters included stiffness index (SI), reflection index (RI), crest time (CT), and interwave distance (IWD).
- Measurements were taken using an adapted plethysmographic device.
Main Results:
- Smokers exhibited significantly higher SI (indicating increased pulse wave velocity) compared to non-smokers.
- Reflection index (RI) and interwave distance (IWD) were significantly elevated in smokers.
- Crest time (CT) showed a small but significant increase in smokers.
Conclusions:
- Chronic tobacco smoking is linked to endothelial dysfunction and increased arterial stiffness.
- All assessed vascular parameters were negatively affected in young smokers.
- These findings highlight the detrimental vascular effects of smoking, even with less than 10 years of use.
