This study introduces a novel method for analyzing child language development in large datasets without predefined stages. It uses statistical measures to examine caregiver speech and child-directed speech patterns.
Area of Science:
- Linguistics
- Developmental Psychology
- Computational Linguistics
Background:
- Characterizing language development in children is complex.
- Longitudinal corpora offer rich data but require sophisticated analytical methods.
- Existing methods may rely on predefined developmental stages, limiting flexibility.
Observation:
- The proposed method analyzes development in large longitudinal corpora.
- It represents development without assuming predefined stages.
- It incorporates caregiver speech and child-directed speech (CDS).
Findings:
- The method utilizes statistical association measures to investigate co-occurrence data.
- It was exemplified with Russian children's acquisition of tense and grammatical aspect.
- This approach allows for flexible analysis of developmental patterns.
Implications:
- This method provides a robust framework for studying language acquisition.
- It can be applied to various linguistic and developmental research questions.
- It enhances the analysis of child-directed speech in developmental studies.
