Summary

Ulnar nerve compression at Guyon

Area of Science:

Background:

  • Ulnar nerve compression commonly occurs at the elbow, not the wrist.
  • Various masses and trauma can cause wrist-level ulnar nerve compression in Guyon's canal.

Observation:

  • Vascular lesions causing ulnar nerve compression in Guyon's canal are rare.
  • Reported vascular causes include aneurysms, tortuous arteries, hemangiomas, and thrombosis.
  • A case of arteriovenous malformation (AVM) compressing the ulnar nerve at Guyon's canal was observed.

Findings:

  • Surgical resection of the arteriovenous malformation led to symptom improvement.
  • Vascular lesions are an uncommon but possible cause of ulnar nerve compression at the wrist.
  • Diagnosis of vascular etiology for Guyon's canal syndrome can be challenging.
