Background:

  • Children with auditory processing disorders (APD) struggle with signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) challenges.
  • Frequency-modulated (FM) systems offer some improvement, but portable personal amplification has not been widely explored.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess if personal amplification improves speech-in-noise performance (attentiveness, recognition) and daily functioning in children with APD.
  • To identify optimal hearing aid features, including gain, directional microphones, noise reduction, and open-ear fitting.

Main Methods:

  • A single-blind, longitudinal study with 14 children (ages 7-11) diagnosed with APD.
  • Children used bilateral, mild-gain, wide dynamic range compression hearing aids with open-ear fittings, directional microphones, and noise reduction for 6 months.
  • Speech recognition (NU-6), auditory performance (ACPT), and parent/teacher-reported function (CHAPS) were evaluated.

Main Results:

  • Hearing aids with noise reduction and directional microphones improved speech understanding in noise compared to unaided conditions.
  • Amplification reduced errors on the Auditory Continuous Performance Test and improved some aspects of the CHAPS questionnaire.
  • Improvements were not statistically significant, indicating a need for further research.

Conclusions:

  • Mild-gain, open-ear hearing aids with directional microphones and noise reduction may benefit some children with APD.
  • A trial basis for these devices is recommended for children experiencing auditory processing difficulties.
