Background:

  • The discontinuation of the radiuscope necessitates new methods for accurate gas-permeable (GP) lens measurement.
  • Accurate measurement of GP lens base curves is crucial for proper lens fitting and visual acuity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To design, manufacture, and validate a novel attachment for corneal topographers.
  • To evaluate the spherical base curves of GP rigid contact lenses using this new attachment.

Main Methods:

  • A custom attachment with a front-surface mirror was integrated into a Humphrey Atlas corneal topographer.
  • The attachment utilized a hemispherical GP lens mount from a radiuscope.
  • Base curve radii of nine rigid polymer buttons were measured using the attachment, compared to a Neitz Auto CG and Reichert Radiuscope.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant difference was found between the measurement methods for base curve radius (P = 0.303).
  • A statistically significant effect of nominal button radius was observed (P = 0.003).
  • The mean SimK and Axial radii measured by the attachment were within the accepted tolerance for GP lenses.

  • This demonstrates the clinical feasibility of using a corneal topographer with the developed attachment.
