Relationship between diabetic retinopathy and sleep-disordered breathing

Background:

• Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of blindness.
• Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is increasingly recognized as a systemic condition.
• The relationship between SDB and diabetic retinopathy stages requires further elucidation.

Purpose of the Study:

• To investigate the association between sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and the progression of diabetic retinopathy.
• To compare the prevalence of SDB in patients with nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) versus proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR).

Main Methods:

• A cross-sectional case-control study involving 48 NPDR and 118 PDR patients.
• Nocturnal pulse oximetry was used to measure oxygen desaturation index (ODI) and mean SpO2.
• SDB was diagnosed if the 4% ODI exceeded 5 events/hour.
