Streamlines, Streaklines, and Pathlines

A streamline represents the trajectory that is always tangent to the fluid's velocity vector at any given point. The velocity of a fluid particle is always directed along the streamline, ensuring the particle continuously follows the streamline's path. Streamlines are particularly useful for visualizing the overall direction of flow in a fluid system, and they provide an instantaneous representation of the flow's velocity field. In steady flow, where conditions do not change over time,...
Super-resolution Fluorescence Microscopy01:37

Super-resolution Fluorescence Microscopy

Super-resolution fluorescence microscopy (SRFM) provides a better resolution than conventional fluorescence microscopy by reducing the point spread function (PSF). PSF is the light intensity distribution from a point that causes it to appear blurred. Due to PSF, each fluorescing point appears bigger than its actual size, and it is the PSF interference of nearby fluorophores that causes the blurred image. Various approaches to achieving higher resolution through SRFM have recently been developed.

Area of Science:

  • Bibliometrics
  • Information Science
  • Network Science

Background:

  • Traditional citation data creates scientific maps but struggles with online access trends.
  • Scholarly web portals generate vast, real-time user interaction (clickstream) data.
  • Clickstream data offers a more comprehensive and current view of scientific activity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the utility of scholarly web portal clickstream data for mapping science.
  • To determine if clickstream data can produce high-resolution and current scientific maps.

Main Methods:

  • Collected nearly 1 billion user interactions from scholarly web portals (2007-2008).
  • Developed a journal clickstream model using a first-order Markov chain.
  • Validated the model against the Getty Research Institute's Architecture and Art Thesaurus.

Main Results:

  • Generated a journal network visualizing relationships between scientific domains.
  • Demonstrated clickstream data's ability to capture global scholarly web portal usage in 2006.
  • Ensured balanced coverage across humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.

Conclusions:

  • Clickstream data yields detailed and contemporary maps of science.
  • This approach corrects the underrepresentation of social sciences and humanities common in citation-based maps.
