Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Pathology
  • Toxicology

Background:

  • Phlegmonous enteritis is an uncommon inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Alcoholic abuse is a significant public health concern with diverse systemic effects.

Observation:

  • A 52-year-old male with a history of alcohol abuse presented with acute abdomen.
  • The patient succumbed to septicemia and its complications.
  • Autopsy findings included phlegmonous inflammation of the ileum and severe fatty liver.

Findings:

  • Microscopic examination revealed numerous Gram-negative rod bacilli in the ileal mucosa.
  • Chronic alcohol ingestion may lead to shortened villi and reduced lysozyme activity in Paneth cells.
  • The case strongly suggests a link between phlegmonous enteritis and alcoholic abuse.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case highlights a potential association between alcohol abuse and the development of phlegmonous enteritis.
  • Understanding this relationship may inform clinical suspicion and diagnostic approaches in patients with similar histories.
  • Further research is warranted to elucidate the specific mechanisms underlying alcohol-induced phlegmonous enteritis.
